Surgical procedures in The Ashe Street Clinic involve the use of expensive specialised equipment. Many of our surgical instruments are used only once and then safely disposed of.  Other surgical instruments are put through a three stage sterilising procedure in accordance with the HSE guidelines to ensure complete safety to patients and staff.  Suturing materials, glues, dressings and surgical assistant time are also required for most surgical procedures.

The cost of all of this is not covered by private health insurance such as VHI, LAYA, AVIVA GLO, ESB or Garda Medical Aid Funds.  Neither are any of these extra expenses covered by the Medical Card.  As a result, we are obliged to charge a levy of €45 to €100 per session for cryosurgery depending on how many warts or verruca's are treated.  €80 for surgical procedures and €100 to €150 for more complex surgical procedures to cover the assistant’s fee, the surgical materials used, insurance, rent, rates, etc. This is known as a ‘’facility fee’’. You may be able to claim some, or all, of this fee back from your tax at the end of the year.

This facility fee is separate from the surgeon’s fee, which is usually paid for in full by the Insurance Companies, the Medical Card or for those without either by the patient him/herself.   The surgeon’s fee includes a free follow up visit to remove sutures, if required.

If you have a skin sample sent to the histopathology lab for analysis in University Hospital Kerry, you may be charged a separate fee directly from the lab (approximately €45) if you do not have private health insurance or a medical card or doctors visit card.

If you have any further inquiries with regard to these fees, please discuss this with one of the Doctors or Nurses in The Ashe Street Clinic.
